Short answer: for workouts you stream at home (the Peloton app, Apple Fitness+, YouTube, or any video class), use a mat big enough to follow the instructor without stepping off it. Classes mix standing moves, side steps and floor work, so a 7' x 5' mat in front of the screen suits most living rooms. Choose the 1/4" Exercise Mat if the class has you in shoes, and the 8mm Yoga Mat for barefoot yoga and Pilates.

Key takeaways

  • Video classes move side to side and down to the floor. A 2-foot mat can't keep up.
  • 7' x 5' fits most living rooms. 6' x 4' for small rooms; 9' x 6' for two people.
  • HIIT, strength and dance in shoes: Exercise Mat. Barefoot yoga and Pilates: Yoga Mat.
  • Rolls up with straps after class if the room has another job.

What a video class asks of your floor

  • Side-to-side moves. Skaters, lateral lunges and dance steps travel a few feet each way. On a narrow mat you land on the floor.
  • Up and down, fast. Burpees and floor-to-standing transitions need room to step back into a plank and stand up again in the same spot.
  • Floor work. Core, glute bridges and stretching need your full length, and something under your knees and back.
  • Jumping. On hard floors a mat absorbs the impact and cuts the noise, which matters with neighbors below.

“It's saving my carpet when I exercise in front of the TV and deadens the noise if I drop a weight.”

Set up in front of the screen

  1. Measure the open floor between the screen and the sofa or wall. Our mats lay flat and don't need extra room around the edges.
  2. Lay the long side facing the screen so side-to-side moves run along the length of the mat.
  3. Keep the screen at eye level when you're standing, and a few feet back from the front edge of the mat.
  4. Leave dumbbells on a corner of the mat, off your path, so they're in reach when the instructor calls for them.

More on the difference in Exercise Mat vs Yoga Mat.

“I just started doing work out videos in my basement and this mat provides enough of a cushion from the hard concrete floor for me to do floor work outs.”

When the living room has another job

A 7' x 5' Exercise Mat weighs 20 lbs. Every mat comes with straps and a carry bag: roll it up tight after class and store it in a closet, under a bed or against a wall. If you can leave it out, you'll skip the setup and probably train more often.

FAQ

What size mat do I need for workout videos?

7' x 5' fits most living rooms and covers side steps and floor work. Go 6' x 4' in a small room, or 9' x 6' if two people work out together.

Can I wear shoes on the mat for app workouts?

On our Exercise Mats, yes: they're built for shoes. Our Yoga Mats are for bare feet only.

Will a mat make my workout quieter for neighbors?

Yes. The mat absorbs shock and reduces vibration, which makes a real difference for jumping on hard floors and in upstairs rooms.

Can I roll the mat up after each workout?

Yes. Every mat comes with straps and a carry bag, and rolls up tight for a closet or under a bed.
