Treadmill or Walking Pad on Carpet: Do You Need a Mat?

Yes. A firm exercise mat gives a treadmill or walking pad a flat base on carpet, keeps fibers away from the belt and protects the carpet. Here is what size to get and how to set it up.

Short answer: yes, put a mat under a treadmill or walking pad on carpet. A firm exercise mat gives the machine a flat, even base, keeps it from sinking into the pile, keeps carpet fibers and dust away from the belt, and protects the carpet from dents and sweat. Pick a mat that covers the whole machine with a little room to step on and off.

Key takeaways

  • On carpet, a treadmill sits on a soft, uneven surface. A firm mat evens it out.
  • Use a 1/4" high-density exercise mat. Keep machines off soft yoga mats.
  • Walking pads usually fit on a 6' x 4'. Most treadmills need 8' x 4' or 9' x 6'; measure first.
  • On thick, plush carpet, rug anchors stop any shifting.

Why carpet needs a mat under the machine

  • A flat base. Carpet pile compresses unevenly under a machine's feet, so the frame can sit slightly tilted. A dense mat spreads the load and gives the feet a flat surface.
  • Less fiber and dust near the belt. A treadmill sits low to the floor, and carpet sheds. A mat keeps the fibers under the mat and away from the motor area. Many treadmill manuals recommend a mat for this reason; check yours.
  • Carpet protection. Machine feet crush the pile and leave lasting dents. Sweat soaks in. The mat takes both, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth.
  • Quieter. The mat absorbs vibration from the belt and your footsteps, which matters in upstairs rooms.

Walking pad (under-desk treadmill) 6' x 4'
Folding or compact treadmill 7' x 4' or 8' x 4'
Full-size treadmill 8' x 4' or 9' x 6'
Treadmill plus space for stretching or weights beside it 9' x 6' or 12' x 6'

Your manual lists the machine's length and width. Pick the mat that covers both, then add room to step on and off. See every size to scale in What Size Exercise Mat Do You Need?

Will the mat slide on carpet?

On low-pile carpet the circle-pattern grip on the bottom holds well, and the weight of a treadmill pins the mat in place. On thick or plush carpet the mat stays flat and stable but may shift slightly under very intense movement. If it does, rug anchors lock it down. Setup on carpet

  1. Vacuum first. Lay the mat on clean carpet so grit doesn't sit under it.
  2. Unroll the mat and let it settle flat before the machine goes on. A day is usually enough for any curl at the ends to relax.
  3. Center the machine and leave a strip of mat at the back and sides to step off onto.
  4. Expect feet to leave marks. Very heavy equipment may leave an imprint in the mat over time. It doesn't affect how the mat works.

Exercise mat, not yoga mat

Our Exercise Mats are 1/4" (6mm) high-density and made for treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, racks and shoes. Our Yoga Mats are softer and made for bare feet only; machines and weights damage them, and that isn't covered by the warranty.

What size mat do I need for a walking pad?

A 6' x 4' exercise mat fits most walking pads with room to step on and off. Measure yours to be sure.

Will a treadmill mat slide on carpet?

On low-pile carpet the grip and the machine's weight hold it. On thick carpet it may shift slightly during very intense movement; rug anchors fix that.

Can I use a yoga mat under a treadmill?

No. Yoga mats are soft and made for bare feet. Machines damage them. Use a 1/4" high-density exercise mat.
